Nissan has begun production of its new hybrid Qashqai at its Sunderland plant
The decision to manufacture the vehicle in the UK will support 7,000 jobs, create up to 24,000 new jobs across the supply chain as well as 5,000 dealership roles.
Meanwhile, to mark the start of production Nissan is introducing new workshops for local pupils in a bid to encourage more people to join the industry.
It has pledged to offer the workshop to all northeast youngsters who want a place.
Alan Johnson, Nissan vice president for manufacturing in the UK, said: "We want every child in the northeast of England to have the opportunity to be inspired by the Nissan Skills Foundation."
