There are cases where these bolts are fracturing and corroding due to saltwater ingress (inter crystalline corrosion). When these bolts reach the point of failure, the motor will detach from the steering rack, causing a loss of power steering. This is not only potentially dangerous but expensive to repair if out of warranty. Regardless of warranty, this defect could cause injury to both occupant(s) and other road users. Petitioners say this cost should not have to be met by the customers.
Affected vehicles have been recalled in North America, but not elsewhere. In the UK, DVSA have investigated this issue, and have advised JLR to issue a voluntary recall, but to no avail.
JLR advised the DVSA that they would fix upon fail, but customers are finding this is not the case and are without a vehicle whilst in dispute with JLR. Campaigners claim this should not be happening as JLR are very aware of the problem. Some owners claim that JLR have denied all knowledge that this design flaw exists when they approached their dealer with either a fault or for advice.
Newer models are being produced with coated steel bolts and anti-corrosive sealant, which demonstrates that JLR are only willing to rectify this recognised design flaw pre-production rather than put right any postproduction models currently in motion on our roads. JLR initially offered fix upon fail due to the DVSA investigation providing information that this fault is most likely to result in a breakdown at slower speeds. Tesla experienced this same design flaw using identical bolts on their model S, they issued a worldwide recall, regardless of the speed being driven during breakdown.
An urgent recall throughout the UK and worldwide for any vehicles fitted with these bolts should be undertaken as a matter of urgency.
Transport Canada issued a safety recall on 12th April 2018 because this issue can increase the risk of "a crash resulting in injury and/or damage to property." Transport Canada reported that 8,104 were affected.
This issue is not restricted to overseas vehicles, an IAEA Council member, a past president, says that he is currently handling a case in then UK!
He encourages you to join a petition to get JLR to make a recall.
