Morgan factory tour
Recently the Birmingham region of the IAEA was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to visit the Morgan factory in the Malvern Hills. We made our visit back in July this year and I am sure all the members that attended had a fantastic day.
We were introduced to our tour guide who was full of enthusiasm and more than happy to pass on his personnel skills and experience from his time spent working at Morgan. After an introductory talk, we were off on the two hour extensive tour of the manufacturing workshops.
The tour started where the completed wooden ash chassis arrives prior to being fitted with the engine, gearbox and axles to make a rolling chassis.
We had the chance to observe the very highly skilled craftsmen create an ash wooden body. Further craftsmen created an aluminium skin to fit the wooden framework. We were then shown through the trim shop were the leather interior was hand stitched.
The start to finish build process was incredible to see and was in keeping with its original work ethics and skills. I am sure I speak for all on the tour when I say how impressive the skill levels were. Along with the more traditional work practises we were also shown modern techniques were vacuum bags were being used in order to shape certain new body panels.
It was nice to see how the offices were still in keeping with the origins of the business.
We were shown the complete range of models currently being built from the new Morgan Aero 8, with a 4.8 litre engine, to the more traditional Morgan four four to the new modern designed Morgan three wheeler.
The day ended in the works museum to see a selection of the original classic Morgan vehicles.
I am sure that all on the day found the Morgan factory tour to be a fascinating experience and would certainly say it was a day to remember.
